Lisa Stephen is a licensed, doctoral-level psychologist with over 26 years experience working with children, adolescents, adults, families and couples. She received her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Boston College in 1988 and her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Michigan State University in 1995. Dr. Stephen is also an EMDR trained psychologist.
Dr. Stephen has extensive experience providing assessment and psychotherapy services in residential, emergency, inpatient, college, community mental health, and employee assistance settings. Dr. Stephen has been in private practice since 2001 and provides services for children, adolescents, adults and families.
In addition to providing mental health services, Dr. Stephen has created and directed a number of clinical programs. In 1995 Dr. Stephen developed a program serving homeless youth that was named one of the top three of its kind in the United States and served as a model for other programs.
Dr. Stephen has provided clinical supervision and consultation for professionals working within community mental health, residential treatment, private practice, and college counseling centers. She has held multiple administrative positions, including serving as the clinical director of a large agency where she was responsible for coordinating the Interdisciplinary Quality Assurance Team, consulting on clinical risk management and liability, writing the agency’s first policy and procedure manual; developing and providing staff training, designing and monitoring outcome and utilization review systems, and directing the agency’s first successful agency-wide accreditation process.
Dr. Stephen was a visiting assistant professor for five years at Middlebury College and previously had appointments at Curry College, Michigan State University and Trinity College. She taught in both the psychology and teacher education departments where she was responsible for instructing traditional courses as well as developing new ones.
Throughout her career, Dr. Stephen has provided a wide array of consultation services and workshops. She continues to provide consultation within the areas of sports and performance psychology, college planning, and giftedness. She also provides clinical consultation for professionals who seek to continue their professional development. In addition, Dr. Stephen maintains an active private practice where she offers assessment and psychotherapy.
Her particular areas of professional interest include sports and performance psychology and optimal performance, late adolescent development and college choice, mindfulness, feminism, gender issues, trauma, giftedness, grief, depression, anxiety, establishing autonomy within connection in relationships, identity development, self esteem and interpersonal skill development.
In her free time, Dr. Stephen enjoys spending time with her family, reading, hiking, snowshoeing, gardening and cooking. She loves being outdoors enjoying nature.
